Getting Started with Geocaching
To get started, go to Geocaching.com for a $10 membership for 3 months. This gives you access to longitude and latitude coordinates that you plug into a GPS device or a smart phone that has the geocaching app on it. Then, you set out on trails to find trinkets stashed in containers tucked under logs or hidden in trees.
Geocaching is a great way to learn navigation skills because you need to understand how to use a compass. It’s a good idea to print out maps and location information ahead of time because it’s easy to get lost if you can’t read your compass correctly.
One key rule when you geocache: If you take a trinket, leave a trinket.
Enjoy!

1. Free – You beat can’t that! The RunKeeper app is a great fitness tracker for your iPhone or Android. With this app, you can track your workouts to improve your fitness level. I love this product because you can track bike riding, running, skiing, swimming – any sports activity. And, you can pipe in your playlist from iTunes, which is a nice feature. The app is free at the iTunes app store or RunKeeper.com. To upgrade, you can buy a RunKeeper Elite subscription for $4.99 a month or $19.99 a year.
2. Here’s a fun tool for the grill: Fire Wire Flexible Grilling Skewers for $20 at Williams Sonoma. Wooden skewers burn, if you don’t soak them in water first. These stainless steel skewers have a flexible cable-style that bend to your grilling surface. And, they fit inside a bag or bowl for marinating. Check out Williams-Sonoma.com.
3. The Cobra Tag finds lost keys with your Android or Blackberry. Trust me this is a cool gadget. I recently lost my keys and it was a drag. After looking all over my house for weeks, I finally got a new set of keys. You still have to replace your plastic scanner cards for the gym, grocery store, library, where ever. The Cobra Tag costs $60 and the app for your phone is free online. You put the device on your keys and put the app on your phone and the two items talk via Bluetooth when either go missing. Cobra Tag is available in July. Go to Cobra.com to find a retailer and look into pre-ordering.
4. Cobra also makes marine electronics, which is perfect for any boating dad. The company sells a 3-Watt Waterproof Handheld VHF Marine Radio, also for $60 at Radio Shack.
5. The final gift idea is the Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 camera. It’s shock-proof, frost-proof, water proof and kid-proof. I love that the word tough is in the name of the product. You can shoot video as low as 30 feet under water. Go to Olympus America.com to find retailers. Price: $380. There are two other models that are less expensive, but this one is the ultimate camera for adventure-seekers.
