Zuzee, A Safe Creative Online Community for Tweens, Launches This Week

During this segment we talk about the launch of Zuzee, a new web site that lets tween girls, ages 8 – 12, create digital storybooks and photo albums and then share them with friends, all within a safe contained community.

Zuzee is perfect for young girls who love to share all of the fun moments in their lives with lots of pictures.

For the next three months, girls can get a free “All Access Z Pass” for unlimited use of the all cool features.  Sign up now to it check out at Zuzee.com.

Toddlers Celebrate Halloween on Oct. 24 at Westwinds Book Shop in Duxbury, Mass.

South Shore parents with toddlers should take advantage of this morning Halloween celebration at Westwinds Book Shop in Duxbury, Mass.  The independent book store is hosting a costume party-book reading at 10 a.m.

Little ones will listen to Little Goblins Ten and Five Little Pumpkins and then go trick-or-treating throughout the shops at the Duxbury Marketplace.  This kind of activity is great for younger kids because night time drama of the real Halloween can be overwhelming for toddlers – it’s dark, spooky, past their bedtime, a recipe for a meltdown… For more information about this event, visit www.westwindsbookshop.com.  Kids in costumes – oh, so cute!

Zuzee Launches for Tween Girls

Today’s MommaJam features an interview with Shelley Voyer, the co-founder of Zuzee, a new web site launching today that lets tween girls, ages 8 to 12, create online storybooks, photo albums, pages and cards with digital photographs of their friends and family.

CLICK ARROW TO PLAY AUDIO.

Zuzee features numerous pre-set designs that girls select for their storybook or photo album.  Then, they drag and drop photos from the photo library on their computer to create all sorts of wonderful memory books.

The creators of Zuzee wanted the online environment to be safe for kids – it’s closed off to the public and only “approved friends” can share photos and information.  Artistic users can scan original artwork in as a JPEG file and then drag and drop the artwork into Zuzee.  Very cool, if kids want to personalize an album or message to a friend or family member or capture a memory of an event in a unique way.

“Girls take a lot of photos, but don’t know what to do with them,” said Voyer.  Zuzee is a great way to add pizzazz to the whole photo-taking process.  Even adults take tons of photos of special occasions only to have them sit in an electronic file.  Zuzee lets kids use photos as a means of expression that’s fun and engaging.  Many of the pre-set books within Zuzee have a journal page, so girls can write about important moments in their life, like a big swim meet, school concert or vacation.

Zuzee is safe for the tween age group it is targeting.  It’s a closed environment, with no Facebook plugins.  Parents must sign and submit a permission form (free, if they mail in the paper copy; $.99, if they use credit card confirmation), and approve direct friends and designs being shared.  Parents are also linked, so they can casually observe what’s going on; they don’t have to sneakily log on as their child and inspect what photos are being exchanged.

Overall, Zuzee is meant to be a creative, fun environment for kids – and that’s just what it is.   The colors and designs are modern and jazzy, and sure to inspire lots of girls.

Starting today, Zuzee is offering a free introductory trial for the next three months, where girls can get an All Access Z Pass for extra designs, special user icons, gifts and an unlimited catalogue of personal designs.  After the introductory period, members can continue enjoying the All Access Z Pass with an annual subscription for $39.95 or $4.99 per month.  Or, girls can use the Basic membership free, which lets them build a profile, upload photos, and save up to three designs.

To get started and take advantage of three fee months, go to Zuzee.com.

We will continue the conversation about Zuzee tomorrow morning on 95.9 WATD-FM with Rob Hakala and Lisa Azizian.  Tune in live from your car or home radio or hit the Listen Now button on the 959WATD.com home page.

Get into Your Dream College

Outside of the Allegheny College Admissions Office

This week at MommaJam, we are talking about college admissions.

‘Tis the season to be waiting for those big fat envelopes saying, “Yes, we want you!”

It’s nice to be wooed by a number of different colleges and universities.  But, getting to that point you need to apply to schools that are right for you.  This week at MommaJam, I talked to Lisa Hoffman, co-founder of a new website called BigFatEnvelope.Net, which helps teens and parents with the tedious task of applying to college.

The site addresses questions like:

  • Should you apply to safety schools and how many or which ones?
  • Should you apply to a school based on location (for instance, if you like snow boarding do you apply to a school in Colorado or Vermont?  The answer is: Yes! and my two cents is Colorado!)

You can write in and ask questions at the “Ask Lisa” section on the website.  In the podcast, Lisa Hoffman provides tips on how to conduct the dreaded face to face interview.  Her advice:  read a book.  Often times, admissions officers ask what book students are currently reading.  It can be either fiction or non fiction, but it should be a book you’re reading for leisure versus academics.

Be careful about what you do around friends with a video camera and digital camera, so reckless behavior does not show up on You Tube or Facebook.  This caution definitely applies to budding college students.  Lisa Hoffman says that college admissions officers are scanning the Internet for behind the scenes behavior on all of their applicants.

Bookmark BigFatEnvelope.Net, for tips and help with this phase of your life!

BigFatEnvelope.Net Helps Teens & Parents with College Applications

Teens and parents finally have help with the often tedious, frustrating and confusing college application process with a new website, BigFatEnvelope.net.

Help with College Apps, Finally!

This podcast radio interview (click arrow above to play) features tips from BigFatEnvelope.net co-founder Lisa Hoffman, who walks you through tough issues and questions, as well as questions you may think are frivolous, such as:

  • How many schools do I apply to?
  • Should I apply to “safety” schools and how many?
  • Is it OK to pick a school based on location, weather and extra curriculum activities (think sunshine in Southern California or snow in Vermont)?  (Surprisingly, the answer is yes!)
  • Should I think about a school’s cafeteria and its quality of food?  (Yes!)

Lisa also gives tips on the face-to-face interview process and the truth about whether college admissions officers scan the Internet looking for incriminating photos and video of each and every applicant coming through their door (yes, again).

BigFatEnvelope.net is packed with information for both teens and parents at this stage in life.  Check it out, and tune into the podcast radio interview with Lisa for more inside scoop on the hectic and nail biting process of going to college.
