Tune into the replay of the Sept. 22, 2011 segment of MommaJam on 95.9 WATD-FM, where we talk about eco-friendly back-to-school lunch boxes and getting kids into reading – just for fun.

Tips for Eco-Friendly Lunch Boxes

During the last MommaJam segment, we talked about healthy back to school lunches.  This week, I have suggestions for eco-friendly lunch boxes with reusable, washable  components, so kids have a trash free lunch.

This is a big topic right now – many schools are setting policy to have trash free lunches and parents need to re-think how they pack their kids’ lunches.

Laptop Lunches makes bento-box-style lunch boxes that come with little containers and compartments for fruits, vegetables and a main meal.  There’s even a small container for dipping sauce or hummus.

You can get the bento box lunch boxes from Laptop Lunches on the South Shore at Foodies in Duxbury and Whole Foods in Hingham.  Or, go to Laptop to  order online or find a store location nationwide.

For kids learning to read, pick books that grab kids’ interest.  Great things to look for include repetition, good picture-word correspondence (do the words accurately reflect what is happening in the picture), and few words per page.  Some great choices are the easy-reader series which include perenial favorites, “Frog and Toad,” “Amelia Bedelia,” and “Little Bear.” offers a collection,”A Series of Series” that includes all of these beginner series and more.

For older children, try the popular chapter book series “The A-Z Mysteries,” “The Magic Tree House,” or “Captain Underpants.”  Laughing Giraffe Books offers these in the collection, “Just One More Chapter.”  Moms out there with a reading mission can go to for more information.   And, check out the MommaJam podcast interview with Alexandra Morrill, the founder of
