MommaJam on 95.9 WATD-FM: 3 Fun Summer Learning Tips

June 28, 2012 at 9:51 pm Leave a comment

Kids lose one to two months of what they’ve learned during school over summer vacation.

Parents need to fill in the gap over the summer, but the best way to do that is to make learning fun!  Here are three key tips to keep the brain power intact until school starts:

1.  MathRock Paper Scissors Toy Store in Duxbury, Mass., has terrific toys that reinforce math skills, including Sumoku, Pirate Arithmetic and Scrabble, which teaches both math and spelling.

2.  Writing – Keep a family journal of summer adventures.  This is a creative way to keep kids writing – whether it’s documenting a long vacation travel or day trips to nearby destinations.  Add colorful drawings and mementos, such as ticket stubs or stickers.  Use a plain white sketchpad, so you can be as creative as kids want, doodles and write down memories in a whimsical way.

3.  Writing/Reading – Visit local independent book stores and libraries, no matter where you are over the summer.  Ask kids to write their favorite book author a letter, explaining why they like the books so much.  Encourage children to write their own book in the style of their favorite author, such as Ron Roy’s A to Z Mysteries, Nancy Drew Mysteries, Harry Potter/sci-fi, Big Nate/comics, etc.  Look into book signings and author visits at local book stores and libraries.  Westwinds Bookshop in Duxbury, Mass., is going to have several author visits in July (stay tuned for these announcements).  Visit author destinations like the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, Mass.

Have a great summer, MommaJam listeners, and Happy 4th of July!
