Fitness Feels Good!

MommaJam Wellness Series in January 2013

Every week in January, we are talking about how to be healthy in 2013.  Last week, we talked about vitamins for kids.  Today, we are talking about yoga for kids.

 1.  Yoga for Kids is the New “IT” Exercise

Finally, yoga for kids has become a mainstream activity.  At a time when kids are constantly plugged in, yoga for kids is needed more than ever.  I interviewed Meg Durkin, the owner of Yoga Magic 4 Kids on the South Shore, who says yoga teaches kids to be introspective and unwind.

Yoga also develops and integrates the right and left side of the brain, which helps with learning.  Yoga can calms chaos in your brain and help with transitions.  Many kids have trouble going from one activity to another.

Here’s a yoga-mediation tip Meg suggests:  Visualize a snow globe visual with all of the snow flakes flying around.  Now, visualize the snow flakes slowly and gently falling to the ground and calming down.  Now, you are ready to learn and concentrate on the day or next activity.

Go to for Meg’s extensive class schedule at the South Shore Conservatory and Open Doors Yoga Studio – both in Hingham.

2.  Yoga Helps Expectant and New Moms

Pre and post natal yoga helps you bond with your baby and prepare for delivery and for caring for your baby after delivery.

Dancing Crow Yoga at the Derby Street Shoppes in Hingham has pre and post natal classes starting up in January.  Check out the classes at this gorgeous studio.

3.  Keep Moving this Winter!

Fitness feels good.  Try yoga at home or at a studio.  Your kids will love it.

Tune in to the next live MommaJam on 95.9 WATD-FM at 7:10 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013.
